Privacy policy
The short version: we collect as little as we can get away with, and we never sell it.

What we collect
When you just read
Nothing that identifies you. We count article views as an anonymous total with no cookie, no identifier and no fingerprint attached. Your theme preference and watchlist are stored in your own browser and never transmitted to us.
When you comment
- Your display name and comment text — published on the site.
- Your email address, if you supply one — optional, never displayed, and never stored in plain text. We keep only an irreversible hash of it, used to show your Gravatar if you have one.
- Your website, if you supply one — published as a link on your name.
- A salted hash of your IP address and browser user-agent — used only for rate limiting and abuse prevention. We do not store raw IP addresses.
When you subscribe
Your email address, so we can send you the editions. Nothing else. Unsubscribe at any time and the record is deleted.
Cookies
This site sets no tracking or analytics cookies of its own. The only cookie we set is a session cookie for the private admin area, which is never issued to ordinary readers.
This site does not currently display advertising. If that changes, this policy will be updated before any advertising cookies are set, and the relevant disclosures will appear here.
Third parties
Publisher favicons are loaded from Google's favicon service, and commenter avatars from Gravatar. Both receive the request necessary to serve the image. Article thumbnails are loaded from the originating publisher's servers. We share no data with these services beyond what is inherent in requesting an image.
Market data is fetched by our servers, not your browser — the data providers never see your IP address.
Retention
Headlines are pruned after roughly thirty days. Comments are kept until you ask us to remove them. Subscriber records are kept until you unsubscribe.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold about you, and to object to its processing. Because we deliberately hold so little, this is usually quick. Write to hello@example.com and we will action it.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
We will update this page when our practices change and revise the date at the top. See also our terms of use and comment policy.
